The difference between data, information and knowledge

Many people will use the three words, “data”, “information”, and “knowledge” interchangeably. However, these words are not defined the same. Many people explain the internet in terms of a network of knowledge, or an exchange of data. While the three words to interact between one another, they are invariably different from one another.

The term knowledge is something that people know. Therefore, it is really what things are contained within our minds. We can have knowledge of where something is. Knowledge also contains personal beliefs as well as expectations. It links ideas, beliefs, predictions, and memories. The mind is responsible for decision making and knowledge contained in the brain for this purpose is continually updated through the signals from your skin, ears, eyes, mouth, and nose. Knowledge is only stored in the brain and no where else. Since computers do not have brains and are incapable of understanding what they process, they are unable to make independent decisions based on knowledge. The brain, however, can and does build knowledge based upon information and data.

Data is/are facts. A person’s height, eye color, and hair color are facts, data. Whether this data is written anywhere or not is irrelevant to it being data. Data is used to describe things. Data can be perceived through senses which are then processed by the brain and stored as knowledge. Humans can use data to form knowledge. Prior to information, knowledge could only be had based upon direct experiences to gather data.

Information is a way in which we can expand knowledge beyond normal senses. Data can be captured in information and then accessed by other people at different times. For example, if a picture of a person is taken, that picture is information. The way the person in the photos looks, however, is data. If the picture is sent to people via email, handed to people, or shared via a photo website, then the person in the photo is not being moved around, but rather, how they look—or their data. This means that people who are far away might be able to see what the person looks like and collect that data, turning it into knowledge. If the picture of the person is destroyed, it does not alter how the person looks. In this instance, the information might be lost in the form of the destroyed photograph, but the data is not destroyed because that remains constant.

It is critical that people understand the difference between knowledge, data, and information so that they can avoid mixing up the three terms. If this is done, critical mistakes might be made. Data is never wrong, it is always right. For example, a person cannot be twenty five years of age as well as seventy years of age at the same time. However, information can be wrong. For example, there might be two files on the same person, the first of which states that they are twenty five years of age and the second of which states that they are seventy years of age.
